President Gül says no plan for political future, signals surprise departure

As debates rage in the Turkish political landscape over who will be the candidates in the upcoming presidential election and whether current President Abdullah Gül will seek to re-run in the race, Gül has left Turkish people stunned with an announcement that he has no future political plans, signaling an earlier-than-expected departure from politics when his term ends in August.

His statement came on Friday after the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) clearly expressed the party's will -- envisioning current Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in the presidential palace.

While pundits and critics as well as AK Party officials were considering the possibility of an exchange of positions between Gül and Erdoğan, reminiscent of the deal between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, Gül revealed his opposition to such a scenario, asserting that the Russian model doesn't fit Turkey, given differences in its historical and political experiences.

"I would like to state clearly that at the present moment, I have no plans for a political future," Gül said. (Today’s Zaman/Cihan)
