CHP asks Parliament to punish AK Party deputy for flying kick

ANKARA - 12.01.2014 19:27:08

Turkey's main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) has handed in a request to Parliament to punish ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) deputy Zeyid Aslan for his flying kick aimed at a judge during a parliamentary commission meeting on Saturday.

The complaint, which was signed by CHP parliamentary group deputy chairman Engin Altay, included a statement that says that Aslan's attack towards Çankırı judge Ömer Faruk Eminağaoğlu tarnished the reputation of the Turkish Parliament.

“In the Justice Commission's meeting dated 11.01.2014, AK Party deputy Zeyid Aslan's physical attack on Chairman of the Judges and Prosecutors Association [YARSAV] Ömer Faruk Eminağaoğlu damaged the [Turkish Parliament] TBMM's reputation among the public. The deputy, along with several other AK Party lawmakers, also prevented the TBMM Justice Commission from functioning properly with their physical assaults,” the petition said.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan leveled harsh criticisms against Eminağaoğlu, who was hit by Aslan's kick during the debate on Saturday, accusing him of trying to make a statement without having the authority to do so.

Turkish parliamentarians threw punches and water bottles during the debate about government control over the appointment of judges and prosecutors, as a feud over the ruling party's handling of a corruption scandal intensified.

Aslan leapt onto a table and launched a flying kick as others wrestled and punched each other, with document folders, plastic water bottles and even an iPad flying through the air.

When the scuffles broke out, parliament's Justice Commission was gathering to discuss a draft bill from the AK Party to give it more say over the judiciary.

The fight erupted when Eminağaoğlu arrived with a petition, arguing that the bill was anti-constitutional, but was not allowed to speak. (Cihan/TZ)
